Quick answer
Repair usually makes sense on a newer boiler with an isolated fault, available parts and no repair history. Replacement deserves serious consideration when the boiler is older, has needed repeated repairs, parts are becoming scarce, or the repair cost is high relative to a new installation. Age alone is not a reason to replace a boiler that works reliably.
This is the question we are asked most often on repair visits, and the honest answer is that it depends on more than the boiler's age. Below is the same framework we use on site — including the situations where we tell customers to keep the boiler they have.
The factors that actually matter
Age
Age is a factor, not a verdict. A well-installed, well-maintained boiler can serve reliably for many years. What age changes is the probability of the next fault and the availability of parts.
Repair frequency
One fault in a decade is bad luck. Three faults in two years is a pattern, and each one costs you a call-out plus the disruption of being without heating.
Repair cost relative to replacement
Compare the quoted repair against the installed cost of a new boiler with a long manufacturer warranty. A major component such as a heat exchanger on an older appliance can represent a substantial share of a replacement, with none of the warranty.
Parts availability
Once a model is discontinued, parts get slower and more expensive to source, and eventually become obsolete. If we tell you a part is on extended lead time in January, that is worth weighing.
Efficiency and running costs
Modern condensing boilers with weather compensation and modern controls generally run more efficiently than much older appliances, particularly at lower flow temperatures. We will not put a guaranteed percentage saving on it — too much depends on your home, your controls and how you heat it.
Warranty and reliability
A new installation typically comes with a manufacturer warranty of up to ten years on eligible models when registered and serviced correctly. That converts unpredictable repair bills into a known position.
Whether the boiler still suits the house
Households change. An undersized combi struggling to serve a second bathroom, or an oversized boiler short-cycling in a small flat, is worth reviewing at replacement time rather than repairing into another decade of poor performance.
Repair vs replace at a glance
| Consideration | Points towards repair | Points towards replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler age | Newer, still in warranty | Older, out of warranty |
| Repair history | First fault | Repeated faults |
| Repair cost | Modest, single component | High relative to a new install |
| Parts | Readily available | Scarce or obsolete |
| Reliability | Otherwise dependable | Frequent lockouts and breakdowns |
| Performance | Meets household demand | Struggles with hot water or heating |
| Warranty | Manufacturer cover still active | No cover, all risk on you |
A simple decision guide
- Minor fault on a newer boiler with parts available — repair is usually the sensible call
- Repeated breakdowns on an older boiler — replacement deserves serious consideration
- A high repair quote relative to replacement cost — ask for both figures and compare properly
- A reliable older boiler with a small, cheap fault — repair it; age alone is not a reason to replace
- Parts obsolete or on long lead time — replacement is often the only practical option

When to call a professional
Safe homeowner checks stop at pressure gauges, radiator valves, controls and visible pipework. Anything involving gas, combustion, the boiler casing, the flue or internal components is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas, follow the appropriate emergency gas safety guidance and do not attempt to work on the appliance.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a boiler repair typically cost compared with a new boiler?
It varies by fault and appliance. The useful comparison is your specific repair quote against your specific replacement quote — which is why we provide both where replacement is a realistic option.
Is it worth repairing a boiler over 12 years old?
Sometimes. If the fault is minor, the parts are available and the boiler has otherwise been reliable, repair can still be good value.
Can I spread the cost of a replacement?
Yes — finance options including interest-free credit are available on eligible installations, subject to status and affordability checks.
