Quick answer
A service is planned maintenance: an engineer inspects, tests and cleans the appliance to the manufacturer's schedule and issues a report. A repair is a diagnostic visit to find and correct a specific fault. If your boiler has stopped working, book a repair — a service will not fix a broken appliance and the visit is not designed for it.
We take this call regularly: the boiler has stopped, and the customer books a service assuming it will get it going again. It is an easy assumption, but the two appointments are designed to do different jobs.
A service is planned maintenance
A service is scheduled, preventative and follows the manufacturer's procedure for your appliance. The engineer inspects the boiler and its installation, verifies safe operation, tests safety devices, cleans components where required and documents the outcome for your warranty. It assumes the boiler is working and confirms that it is working safely and correctly.
A repair fixes a specific fault
A repair visit starts from a symptom — a fault code, a lockout, no hot water, a leak, a noise. The engineer's job is diagnosis first, then correction. That may involve testing components, checking the system, and fitting parts. Time is allocated for fault finding, which a service booking is not.
| Service | Repair | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Planned maintenance and safety checks | Diagnose and fix a fault |
| Boiler state | Working | Faulty or unreliable |
| Outcome | Condition report and service record | Fault identified and corrected |
| Warranty relevance | Usually required annually | Not a substitute for servicing |
| Parts | Only routine items where specified | Parts fitted as needed |
Can they be combined?
Often, yes. If we attend a repair and the boiler is due a service anyway, it can make sense to complete both in one visit once the fault is resolved. Ask when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it is practical.

Book a repairWhen to call a professional
Safe homeowner checks stop at pressure gauges, radiator valves, controls and visible pipework. Anything involving gas, combustion, the boiler casing, the flue or internal components is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas, follow the appropriate emergency gas safety guidance and do not attempt to work on the appliance.

Why booking a service on a broken boiler wastes a visit, and how the two appointments actually differ. If you'd like a second opinion before spending money, speak to us first — we'd rather tell you your boiler is fine than sell you something you don't need.
Frequently asked questions
Will a service fix my boiler fault?
Not usually. A service may reveal a fault, but correcting it is separate work and is quoted separately.
Does a repair reset my warranty service requirement?
No. Manufacturer warranties require the specified annual service; a repair visit does not replace it.
Which is more expensive?
A service is a fixed, predictable cost. A repair depends on the fault and any parts required — we confirm the price before proceeding.
